Run for the Young

10 volunteers are running for youth supports in Kerry.

Last week 10 hardy souls kicked of their training plan for the Tralee international marathon happening in the town this march 15th. As well as training for the marathon the runners have been busy fundraising for the KDYS who provide support services and recreational activities for young people in Kerry. Helena Falvey of the KDYS said: The KDYS have been supporting young people in Kerry since 1971 and we are committed to growing the services we offer to young people in Kerry. The only way we can do that is by getting out there and fundraising. We are so grateful to the 10 volunteers who are putting their bodies on the line to support the young people of Kerry.

The marathon which is staged over St Patrick’s weekend in Tralee is one of the highlight events in the town’s calendar. The full- and half-marathon events debuted in 2013 and attracted almost 1,500 participants from all over the world. No doubt 2015 will see the marathon attract even more runners to the town as it has been hailed by runner magazine as one that ranks right up there with the best.

Conor McAuliffe who is running the marathon on behalf of the KDYS said “Through my work in Listowel, I came into contact with KDYS, I could clearly see the benefit of their work empowering young people in the community so I said I’d run the marathon in the hope of generating support for the organisation and young people around the county.

The KDYS still have one or two reserved places left for charity runners so if you want to challenge yourself with a half or full marathon call into any of the 5 KDYS youth centres for more info. Or if you are already running you can run for the young by picking up a KDYS sponsorship card in the centres. If you’re not up for the run just yet, you can support the KDYS marathon runners going online at idonate.ie and searching for the Tralee international Marathon  2015 in aid of KDYS or by texting KDYS to 50300 to donate 2€. 100% of text cost goes to the KDYS across most network providers. Some providers apply VAT which means that a minimum of €1.63 will go to the KDYS service provider: LIKECHARITY. Helpline: 01 4433890.
