Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) is a Community-based Youth Work Organisation. We respond to the needs of Young People, their Families and their Communities in a caring and supportive manner. Our Values are Young Person centered, Inclusive, Respectful, Non-Judgmental, Fun, Empowering and Professional
KDYS has a four pronged approach in our strategy to respond to the Covid-19 crisis:
- SUPPORT the many and often vulnerable young people and families involved in a range of KDYS services currently.
- The provision of accurate INFORMATION with practical advice and support enables young people to cope with the overwhelming nature of the global situation.
This includes providing young people and parents with important and reliable advice and tools across a range of accessible platforms.
- REACHING OUT to vulnerable people in our community
- PLANNING the necessary services and supports that will be required post-crisis
The Covid-19 Pandemic has thrust the world into an emergency situation not seen in our lifetime. The highly infectious nature of the virus has forced the immediate introduction of health guidelines which has seen all workplaces and practices transformed overnight. KDYS has quickly responded to take on all measures to protect staff in the workplace while simultaneously incorporating new work methodologies to ensure that all young people and communities continue to receive essential support at this very anxious time. This is possible due to the committed and highly skilled workforce across KDYS.
- Support the many and often vulnerable young people and families involved in a range of KDYS services currently.
This involves KDYS using technologies to ensure that people remain supported while also capturing many of the new issues emerging for them under these extreme circumstances and developing innovative responses to same. Service here include drug & alcohol supports, supporting at risk young people, family support, young people and crime diversion and community based youth work responses.
- We are consistently reviewing our capacity to respond and adapt to evolving circumstances.
- Youth Information & Activities
Young people are bombarded with a vast amount of information across a range of platforms which can add to anxiety and fear- trying to make sense of this can be challenging.
The provision of accurate information with practical advice and support enables young people to cope with the overwhelming nature of the global situation. This includes providing young people and parents with important and reliable advice and tools across a range of accessible platforms.
Also reaching out and listening to young people about their concerns and needs at this time. We are constantly coming up with new ideas to engage with all young people across the County.
- Reaching out to vulnerable people in our community
Skilled KDYS staff using any extra capacity to reach out and support vulnerable people, especially those isolating in Kerry, to help them through this traumatic time. This entails working co-operatively and responsively with other services and organisations to support those most in need in our local community at a time of crisis. Being a community based organisation with a network of services, youth centres and infrastructure is our strength at this time.
As we manage through the Covid Crisis, KDYS staff will work together to be ready to best support young people and communities to adapt to the future “new normal”. The crisis has demonstrated the importance of “Community” in all its forms; ranging from the local to national and to Global Communities and responsibilities.
