It take a community to raise a child so strengthening communities are at the heart of everything we do.
Each year the KDYS support 6,000 young people and 500 volunteers in communities across Kerry and parts of cork. The KDYS community youth work team provide a number of activities and support in Schools, in Youth Centres and in Communities.
Youth Clubs and Cafés
Much of our work in communities focuses on supporting volunteers to deliverer youth clubs, youth cafes and youth activities around the county. There are more youth clubs in Kerry than in any other county and they form a vital piece of their communities. Generally Youth clubs and cafes open one or two nights a week in a local community hall. Youth clubs and cafés are safe spaces that give young people a chance to make new friends, get involved in activities and interact with a trained and dedicated volunteer. Volunteers are at the heart of the KDYS youth clubs and cafés and they play a pivotal role in ensuring happy young people who are connected and respected in their communities. If you would like to volunteer to start, run or just be involved in a youth club click here.
Mobile Youth Café
Through the use of the KDYS Mobile Youth Café the KDYS can deliver programmes to young people throughout rural Kerry. The Mobile Youth Café is currently used to help new youth clubs get established in their communities, attend community events and festivals across the diocese and acts as a hub for delivering youth work workshops in rural areas.
Comhairle na nÓg
The KDYS also run Kerry comhairle na nÓg in partnership with Kerry County Council. Comhairle na nÓg holds an Annual General Meeting in September or October, to which children and young people are invited from local schools and youth groups. A Comhairle na nÓg Committee is also elected (or sometimes selected) at the AGM. This committee is responsible for working on the topics identified at the AGM and being the consultative forum that works with decision-makers locally and nationally.
Youth Events, Summer camps,community initiatives
Each year the KDYS run and organise a myriad of youth activities such as youth games, youth factor talent show, KDYS annual Youth Day as well as community initiatives such as youth union, vegetable growing, wreath making and other activities that focus on getting young people connected to and respected by their communities. Nearly every community in Kerry has some level of KDYS engagement. If you would like to find out what’s happening in your community please look at our map here, or contact one of our 5 youth centres.
KDYS Working with Schools

This includes talks on cyber bullying, sexual health and drug and alcohol awareness and other important issues.
